Still scarred by the sale of Torres and the subsequent flop of Andy Carroll, Liverpool decided to try and redeem some face by painting another premier league club as inept in the transfer window.
Liverpool owner John Henry today admitted that striker Luis Suarez did in fact have a £40 million buy-out-clause in his contract.
What is hilarious about this whole fiasco is that while Liverpool fans were quick to balk at the idea of Arsenal offering a pound over the asking price, they were also just as quick to laugh when it transpired that no such clause existed.
In fact the media backlash painted those in charge of Arsenal's transfers as misinformed and naive, clearly having been taken for a ride by Suarez's agent and Liverpool FC.
What actually happened in TLR's understanding is that Liverpoool received an offer for Suarez which did free the striker to leave the club. The minimum amount required to trigger his buy-out-clause was met so why should Arsenal piss away another 1, 2 or £3 million, just to be polite?
If you ask me prices have got way out-of-hand anyway thanks to teams who can afford to offer vastly disproportionate amounts of money because they don't have to worry about breaking even. It's like playing a virtual football game, when the money doesn't matter it loses all value and becomes an exercise in fancy and greed rather than pragmatism.
Because Bale had gone for a new record sum and Monaco and PSG had just forked out £stupidamount for their new marquee signings, Liverpool decided that Suarez was suddenly worth a minimum of £50 million or whatever was quoted at the time.
The simple fact is that Liverpool did not want to sell Suarez, the player was free to leave but Henry has since admitted that he had the finacial power to make another season at Anfield seem an attractive proposition to the Uruguyan. Forget loyalty or passion for the team, Suarez is there because Henry can still afford his wages.
Henry is quoted as saying, "Arsenal offered £40m and one pound for him and triggered his buy-out clause," yet by his own admission "Since apparently these contracts don't seem to hold, we took the position we're just not selling."
So while Henry was releasing statements to the press accusing Arsene and the board of smoking pot, he was lying all along. If he had any decency (hah) he would apologise to Arsenal FC for his comments over the summer and just tell it how it is from now on. It's one thing to 'play the game' and be a bit wiley when it comes to your rivals, however to call Arsenal liars when he knew full well what the details of Suarez's contract were is pretty terrible behaviour from someone who is running the club.
